Meet a few of the Auburn SCORE Mentors:

 
Irene Stafford - Chair

Irene is presently Chair of the Auburn Chapter.  She and her husband moved to Skaneateles in 1968 and established a plumbing, heating, and electrical business and began taking business courses at Cayuga Community College.  After receiving an Accounting and a Business Certificate, Irene enrolled in the “Women in the Life Long Learning” program at Wells College where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and was initiated into Phi Beta Kapa.  In 1991, Irene was invited to attend Syracuse University’s two year Executive MBA program where she graduated with honors in 1993.  In the late 1990’s, Irene owned and operated a franchise business (Mail Boxes Etc.) for 9 ½ years in the Fairmount area.  She also did accounting and tax work for other people under the name of Management Consulting Services.

Irene has served the Skaneateles area in many volunteer capacities and has traveled extensively throughout the world exchanging educational and accounting procedures in Russia, the Ukraine, China and South America.  Irene was on the Skaneateles School Board for 21 years and taught Entrepreneurship and Basic Accounting for 12 years with the Cayuga-Onondaga Adult Education Program.

 
Richard Paulino - Vice Chair

Richard is a lifelong resident of Auburn, New York having grown up on Barber street with many of the friends he still has today. Richard graduated from West High School and Auburn Community College before going off to Michigan State University where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.  Dick entered the Naval Officers Cadet School in Newport Rhode Island and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and served four years of active duty.  Richard also served 26 years in the Naval Reserves, retiring in 1989 with a rank of Captain.

Richard returned to Auburn to work in the financial office of Loeb Rhodes which was the predecessor to the Smith Barney Company in present day Auburn.  After serving as a financial consultant, Dick became the resident manager in 1981.  Richard became a member of the Firm’s President’s Council for outstanding levels of production and client services.  Richard retired in 2002, after 35 years of service. In 1975, Dick was appointed Commissioner of Elections for Cayuga County and retired in 2004.

Richard has been active in our community serving on numerous volunteer boards as a member and leader.  Included in his many civic involvements are:

Nelsa Selover - Secretary

Nelsa is the Retired Director of the Cayuga County Office for the Aging. Prior to that she served as the Director of Social Services at the Cayuga County Nursing Home from 1984-1994. Nelsa was one of the founders of the Cayuga County Human Services Coalition, and continues to be a life time member. She continues to serve as an advocate for the seniors of Cayuga County as a Board Member of Bluefield Manor, Boyle Senior Center, New York StateWide Senior Action Council and is a member of the Cayuga County Council of Senior Citizens. Nelsa is a proud graduate of Cayuga Community College, Auburn, NY with a degree in the Humanities and Wells College, Aurora, NY. with a BA Degree in Sociology. She also has a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. In 2006, Nelsa joined the Auburn SCORE Chapter to share her expertise in helping Entreprenuers start up or expand their small business. Work experience includes good organizational skills, grant writing, human relations and ability to network with others in our community to help potential business owners tap into the resources they will need to decide if starting their own business is a good fit for them and to be a success.


Maureen Riester - Treasurer

Maureen is the Business Development Specialist for the Cayuga Economic Development Agency (CEDA).  In this role, she is responsible for attracting new businesses to expand or relocate to Cayuga County and providing resources for entrepreneurs in emerging businesses. She is a certified SCORE mentor and treasurer for the Auburn Chapter.  As a graduate of RIT’s College of Business in marketing and communication, she plays a very active role in CEDA and SCORE’s marketing and public relations. Her work history includes sales, marketing, account management, product management, and counseling.

Maureen grew up with Riester’s General Service, Inc., a home appliance store her grandparents, Bernard and Esther Riester started in 1945. She was raised as an avid volunteer and still remains very active in the community. She is past chair and current steering committee member of IGNITE, Cayuga County’s Young Professionals group, and was named Cayuga County’s Outstanding Young Professional of the Year in 2010. She is an active volunteer, serving on multiple local boards and committees. Maureen lives in Cayuga County with her husband and their two little boys.


Nancy Ansteth - Immediate Past Chair

Nancy came to Central New York in 1982 when she accepted a supervisory position with Anheuser-Busch in Baldwinsville. She later moved into the Training Manager’s position which prompted her to pursue her Master’s Degree in Human Resource Education (Training & Development) at Boston University. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in languages from D’Youville College, Buffalo, NY.

Following her brewery experience, Nancy turned her attention to small business development and education. Gaining her NYS certification as a business advisor, she has been employed with the Small Business Development Center at Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, for over 10 years. She was also the Small Business Educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension, Auburn, NY and Director of Appleseed Trust in Syracuse.  During these activities, Nancy has participated as an Auburn SCORE volunteer which she will continue to do into her retirement years. In these capacities Nancy has advised clients face-to-face, via email and over the phone. Additionally, she has delivered classes to budding entrepreneurs covering the varied aspects of starting and managing one’s own enterprise. She continues to design and deliver courses based on perceived client needs.

Assisting clients in the preparation of loan packages for lending institutions is an important duty of any advisor or counselor. The prospect of tackling this project alone is daunting for most entrepreneurs; we help take the mystery out of it.


Joe Sarnicola

Joe has worked out of his home office as a freelance professional writer and journalist since 1993. As part of his services, he provides resume and cover letter writing and job search assistance, with one of his strengths being able to help individuals assess their abilities and experience and present themselves in a professional manner. Over the course of more than 33 years as a Head Custodian with the Auburn School District and the YMCA, Joe has hired, trained, scheduled and managed employees under his direct supervision.

Joe has also designed and taught writing classes at the Cayuga/Onondaga BOCES and Cayuga Community College Community Education Programs, and he has taught guitar through the same programs as well as privately in his studio. He has connections with local business owners and resources that may be of assistance to someone hoping to start or expand their own business.

He holds an AA degree in Liberal Arts from Cayuga Community College, and is a veteran of the US Army Corps of Engineers. He is currently studying to be a certified Guided Meditation Leader.


Larry Pidgeon

Larry has owned his own contracting business since 1986 and has a grassroots approach to business startup by recommending ways to "boot strap" in order to incur as little debt as possible.  He has experience with debt management and turning around a business to make it profitable.  His areas of expertise include sales, management, marketing, and safety.

Larry has worked with all types of home improvement and underwent a change in business structure in 2007 from Pidgeon Roofing to Pidgeon Inc. to encompass a more accurate picture of his business services.

John Nolander
